Flora and fauna

Living beings

Laciana Valley was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 2003. It was also declared SBPA Zone (Special Bird Protection Area), and it was integrated in Red Natura 2000 (European ecological zone of biodiversity conservation). Given the wealth of its mountains, in the Valley we can find several species of both, flora and fauna.

Flora: Our mountains are covered in bush, specially Heather and Spanish Broom. With regard to flowers, the most remarkable are Gritsandanas (Daffodil), which is one of the symbols of the Valley. The generous forests are mixed forest composed basically by oak, birch, holly, maple, lime, yew, beech, and wild cherry trees. There is also a wide variety of fungus and mushrooms, many of them edible and highly appreciated by mycology experts.

Fauna: The mountains of this Valley are the home of several animal species. The most important ones because of the low population and protection are brown bear and Cantabric Capercaillie. Both of them are endangered and protected species. You can find in our Valley one of the biggest reserves of these species in the whole Cantabric range. Together with these species live wolves, roe deers, chamois, boars, hares, partridges and wildcats. The birds in our Valley are also important: owls, eagles, kites, kestrels, storks and ducks. In our rivers you will find trouts and otters. Our main river, Sil river there are also carps.
